Meteor spectra -- possible link between meteorite classes and asteroid families

Abstract. The possibility of determining the chemical composition of meteoroids during their penetration into the Earth's atmosphere from meteor spectra is discussed. It is shown that individual classes of achondrites can be identified. Meteor spectroscopy therefore provides an opportunity to study the heliocentric orbits of achondrites and their relations to asteroid families. Among 53 investigated meteoroids one probable diogenite was found. Its orbit shows that it may have been transported to the Earth via the 3:1 resonance with Jupiter.
